Plate
The plate is circular-octagonal in shape, with an evenly contoured but slightly concave rim, pinched at each corner. It is complete except for a few chips near the rim. The rim is thick and slightly domed. The rim is slightly inclined, the wall is curved and the bottom is flat. On the reverse, the plate rests on a small annular foot; the bottom is recessed and flat. There appear to be three traces of three pernette marks on the reverse of the plate. There are three traces of pernette on the front of the plate. There is a transfer printed mark under the base: an oval cut in the center ; The decoration is applied by transfer printing; it is a very dark blue color with a slightly diffused oriental motif (Two figures or Conversation). The printed decoration is visible on the marli, on the wall and on the inner base, and occupies almost the entire face of the plate. The decoration on the marli consists of three different elements. Near the rim is a band of small pearls in reserve, each with a dark blue core. The main decoration consists of two groups of alternately repeated motifs. The motifs appear to be delimited by a poly-lobed medallion finished with a spearhead motif and bordered by a drapery and two scrolls. One of the medallions features a body of water bordered by a cliff and a tree, while the other shows an islet with pavilion and tree. One of the groups is composed, near the edge, of two half-rows of alveoli adorned with radiating lines and an open core; they are bordered by two interlocking lozenges adorned on the inside with plant motifs and a butterfly with outstretched wings. The other group features the same honeycomb background, but is interrupted in the center by two squares and a rectangle made of two Greek shapes, which enclose rows of core beads; this motif is bordered by a butterfly with outstretched wings. The other group consists of a wide band of staggered rhombuses adorned with an internal cross. The band and entablature are interrupted by two squares and a rectangle made of two Greciques, which enclose rows of core beads. Close to the wall are foliage and flowers. The wall is adorned with a thin-stroke band made of one row and two half-rows of staggered alveoli, decorated with open-core radiating lines. The background decoration is bordered by the wall band. It features an oriental scene with river, bridge and islands. On the main island, in the foreground and hatched, stand two tiered pagodas topped by a roof with a central spearhead; at their foot is a small open house, and they are bordered by trees topped by birds in flight and arranged in a V-shape; there are rocks on the water’s edge and on the mainland. To the right of the house is an unhatched circular area in which two standing figures, seen in profile and facing each other, are painted; they hold a raised stick in one hand. Further to the right rises a tiered pagoda topped by a roof with a central spearhead. To the right stretches a single-arch bridge, seen in profile, that spans a stream to reach another island on which pagodas and other buildings stand, bordered by trees and high cliffs. In the middle of the point are two standing figures, seen in profile and facing each other; they hold a raised stick in one hand. There are rocks in the water at the foot of the point, and two boats bobbing in the background. The rendering of the scenery is sharp.
