Plate
The plate is complete; there are slight flaws on the face and two breaks have been repaired with glue. The plate is circular with a plain rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is socked and the bottom is flat and recessed. The plate rests on a small milled foot that is free of glaze ; The decoration is hand-painted in underglaze blue. It is vegetal in style. The painted decoration is visible on the marli, on the wall and on the inner background. The frieze consists of a narrow braid underlined by a ring and decorated with a latticework of alternating X’s and rhombuses. The decoration on the wall is similar to that on the marli. The central decoration consists of a rock with a hole, symbolizing the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, traced and painted in blue. It is flanked by leafy, flowering plants, each of which appears to be adorned with a large peony. To the right are bamboo plants with curved stems. The rim of the plate is covered with an iron-brown coating.
