Plate
The plate is circular in shape, with a wavy rim. It is complete, with the exception of a few small chips on the face. The rim is thick and slightly domed. The rim is sloping and concave, with a bulge at its junction with the wall; the wall is curved and the base is flat. On the reverse, the plate rests on a small annular foot surrounded by two rings; the bottom is recessed and flat. There are three traces of three pernette marks on the reverse of the plate. There are also three traces of pernette on the face of the plate. There are two flaws in the glaze on the marli. There is a mark printed in brown under the marli and under the bottom. Under the marli, the mark consists of a rectangular cartouche made of acanthus leaves and scrolls, which surrounds the word: Cabrian in attached letters. The cartouche is surmounted by a lion rampant above a knight’s torso, probably. Below the cartouche reads: PHILLLIPS. The mark below the background is the letter E followed by a dot. There are numerous linear marks on the inner base. The inner glaze is matte; the transfer printed decoration is brown in color and features an English rural motif (Cambrian). The printed decoration occupies almost the entire face of the plate. The decoration on the border consists of three different elements. Near the rim, a small band of pearls supports a cross and alternating three-lobed pearls. The main motif consists of a background of small flowers in reserve, alternating with two long branches adorned with different flowers. The marly decoration extends across the wall and into the background, and is bordered by a frieze of alternating scrolls and a rosette. The background depicts an English rural scene, with a bridge, buildings and mountains. In the foreground is a path bordered by shrubs and a river; a woman and child walk from the front, and a man and a donkey laden with bundles from the back; they are heading towards a stone bridge with a single arch. Near the bridge stands an imposing manor house and a castle keep, which appears to be in ruins; other buildings rise in the background, at the foot of high mountains topped by thick clouds. The rendering of the decor is clear. The junction of the marli frieze is visible.
