Plate
The plate is complete. The plate is circular with a plain rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is low and the base is flat. The plate rests on a small ring-shaped foot that is free of glaze. The back of the plate shows some flaws in the paste, in the center of the base ; The decoration is hand-painted in blue underglaze and red overglaze, with touches of gilding, in the Imari style. It is figurative in style. The painted decoration is visible on the inner border and on the inner background. The frieze is composed of two different elements, placed alternately; it is bordered near the edge by a blue-painted fillet and by a double fillet near the wall. The main element is outlined and painted blue: it consists of a tree trunk on the left, with one of its branches extending to the right, near the edge of the plate. This branch is trimmed with red-painted leaves. This trunk is bordered on the left by what appears to be a leafy, curved stem, traced and painted blue; the lower part of the stem is in reserve. At the foot of the tree stands a long building with a double-pitched roof, one wall of which seems to have a square opening; it is drawn and painted in blue. This motif, repeated four times, is interrupted by the same motif, repeated the same number of times. It consists of a flower bordered on either side by a long, three-lobed leaf: the whole is traced and painted red. The flower is bordered on either side by a double parenthesis, the inner one a single blue line, the other a double line with the central space painted blue. The marli features gilding in places. The central motif is a figurative scene with figures, a fence, trees and birds; it is drawn and painted mainly in blue, with additions drawn and painted in red, and is surrounded by a double ring. The main element is a long fence running from left to right in the center of the scene, with a central recess. In front of one section of the fence stand three bald figures, who appear to be children. In two cases, part of their clothing is drawn and painted in blue, the other part in red; in the other case, the entire figure is drawn and painted in red. In all cases, the figures’ heads are drawn in red. The figure on the left is reaching for the branches of a leafy tree, drawn and painted in blue with a few leaves in red. One of the figures in the center of the scene is holding a small leafy branch, while the third seems to be reaching out for one. Two birds flutter above the two figures. In the foreground, a blue-painted leafy plant with red flowers stands on a tiered terrace. The rim of the plate is covered with a pale brown plaster.
