Plate
The plate is complete; it is missing around the rim and has been repaired with metal studs. The plate is circular with a plain rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is low and the bottom is flat and recessed. The plate rests on a small milled foot, located in line with the outer wall and free of glaze. The plate is broken and has been repaired with metal spikes. The reverse side of the plate has three pairs of drilled holes running through it: these pairs are still pierced by copper metal spikes. The breaks and spikes are consolidated with a white material ; The decoration is hand-painted in blue underglaze and red overglaze, with touches of gilding, in the Imari style. It is of the oriental garden and landscape type. The painted decoration is visible on the marli, on the wall and on the inner background. The decoration on the border is composed of the same group of floral elements, repeated three times and arranged in a triangle. The central element is a leafy, flowering plant traced and painted in blue, with long, wavy side branches. Each is trimmed with leaves traced and painted in red with gold highlights. The decoration on the wall consists of a wide band traced in blue and adorned with two different elements arranged in alternation. The most important element is a trellis traced in red, interrupted by a central flower traced and painted in red and gold, and surrounded by double arcs, traced and painted in blue. The central decor features a garden scene, with a two-panel fence resting on a two-level terrace. The terrace is traced in blue and painted in faded red, while the fence is traced in blue and painted in blue and red with gilding. In the center of the terrace stands a perforated rock, symbolizing the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, traced and painted blue with gilding; its top is stepped. Behind the rock rise two leafy, flowering shrubs and the head of a bamboo plant. The shrubs are traced and painted blue with gilding, and are trimmed with leaves traced in red and painted red and gold. The central bamboo is traced and painted red. A winged insect, traced in blue and painted in blue and red, twirls above the bamboo.
