Plate
The plate is complete; one break has been repaired with metal studs. The plate is circular with a plain rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is low and the bottom is flat. The plate rests on a small milled foot that is free of glaze, and the bottom is recessed. The reverse of the plate features seven pairs of circular drilled holes, each holding a pair of copper metal spikes; made from a rod, these spikes are each inserted into a pair of small holes. Two of the pairs of holes are visible on the face of the plate; the decoration is traced and hand-painted in blue underglaze. The decoration can be seen on the rim, side and bottom of the plate, as well as on the reverse. It is of the Chinese garden landscape type. The frieze is composed of two elements. Near the marli is a narrow braid adorned with a row of scrolls. The eastern border is decorated with triangular plant groups. The groups are made up of a bamboo trunk, a pine trunk and two plum tree trunks in blossom, which rest on the net near the edge. The decoration on the wall is a spiked latticework braid, interrupted in four places by a flower between two leafy stems and bordered by a pair of arcs. The background decoration is encircled by a ring and consists of a garden enclosed by a long, angular U-shaped fence made of vertical posts and openwork panels; it surrounds a tall, leafy tree whose top seems to be lost in a layer of stylized clouds and painted in faded blue. Outside the fence are various objects grouped together, including two rectangular boxes painted dark blue and stacked on a braided mat, an inverted bell-shaped vase whose neck holds a scroll and two flowering stems painted dark blue, and then a massive two-tiered stand atop which rests a small tripod support painted dark blue, which itself supports a small circular object with a long spout, such as a burner or oil lamp. The marli is decorated on the reverse with two wavy stems. The rim of the plate is covered with an iron-brown coating.
