Plate
The plate is complete. The plate is circular in shape, with an undulating rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is socked and the bottom is flat and recessed. The plate rests on a small milled foot, located in line with the outer wall and free of glaze. The decoration is hand-painted with overglaze enamels in pink, blue, green, turquoise, orange, white and black, in the Famille rose style, with touches of gilding. The pattern is vegetal with an oriental garden. The painted decoration is visible on the inner border and on the inner background. The decoration on the marli is composed of four groups of similar floral elements arranged in a cross. Each consists of leaves painted in blue and turquoise with black highlights; each is trimmed with a pink-painted flower and another traced and painted in red with gold highlights. A small winged insect drawn and painted in red with gold highlights twirls among the flowers. The central decor features a garden scene, with a two-panel fence resting on a straight terrace. The terrace is painted in black. The fence is drawn and painted in orange-red with gold highlights; the panels are adorned with painted latticework. Behind the fence rises a leafy, flowering plant, outlined in black and painted green and turquoise, with one flower painted pink and another outlined and painted red with gold highlights. On this terrace rests a large, blue-painted rock with a hole in it, symbolizing the Chinese philosophy of Taoism. Behind the boulder rise leafy, flowering plants, with leaves painted green and turquoise and flowers painted pink and white in one case, and red with gold highlights in the other. There’s also a large, leafy, flowering shrub, outlined in black and painted green and blue; it’s trimmed with leaves painted green and turquoise and flowers, one large one painted pink while the others are painted orange-red and gold, as well as pink and white. On one of the branches stands a bird seen in profile, drawn in orange-red and painted in orange-red with gilding. The rim of the plate is covered with an iron-brown coating.
