Plate
The plate is circular in shape, with a plain rim pinched in places. It is complete, except for a small chip under the bottom. The rim is thick and domed. The rim slopes slightly inwards, with a small bulge at its junction with the wall; the wall is curved and the base is slightly domed. On the reverse, the plate rests on a milled foot; the bottom is recessed and flat. The glaze is cracked on the front and reverse. A hard, green wax-like material has been applied to the underside, partially masking the mark. Printed in blue, this mark is divided into five registers; it appears to consist of a royal crown surmounted by the words: ASH(WORTH BROS) in an arc; below the crown are the words Real Old Canton in an arc and in handwritten letters; below it we read: ENGLAND, and finally: Rg No 669105. There are linear markings on the inner base of the plate; the transfer printed decoration is blue in color and oriental in pattern. The printed decoration is visible on the marli, on the inner wall and on the inner base. The decoration on the marli consists of three different superimposed elements. Near the rim is a pale blue band delimited by two lines and adorned with dark blue oblique lines, imitating a cord. This is followed by a narrow band in pale blue, then a wide band in pale blue adorned with a row of stars, each consisting of an X and a cross interlocked in dark blue. This is followed by a narrow band in reserve, then a row of short arced strokes in the center in reserve, adorned with oblique strokes. The wall is adorned with a wide band in pale blue, decorated with a row of double X’s in dark blue. The background decoration is surrounded by a ring that borders the wall band. It features a stylized oriental scene with bridge, islets and pagodas, outlined in blue. In the foreground is an islet painted pale blue with two trees and two rocks; to its right is a three-arched bridge. A junk sails in the background of the bridge. Three islets are visible in the background. On the largest islet, painted blue, stand a pagoda and a pavilion with a figure; a willow tree borders the pagoda. The other two islets are also inhabited. Two small boats ply the water. The scenery is clearly rendered.
