Plate
The plate is complete; there is a flaw on the inner base, breaks have been repaired with metal studs and there is some glaze missing around the rim. The plate is circular with a plain rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is low and the base is flat. The plate rests on a small milled foot that is free of glaze, and the bottom is recessed. The reverse side of the plate features four pairs of circular drilled holes, each holding a pair of copper metal spikes; made from a rod, these spikes are each inserted into a pair of small holes. A hole with the end of a spike is visible on the face; the decoration is traced and hand-painted in blue underglaze. The decoration covers the rim, wall and bottom of the plate. It is of a figurative, lakeside landscape type. The complex frieze on the border is composed of two groups of alternately repeated elements, bordered by a fillet near the edge. One group consists of spirals bordered at one end by an inclined scroll and at the other by a butterfly with outstretched wings; the spirals support flowers and plant groups. The other group is composed of two geometrical elements painted dark blue and adorned with reserved motifs, plant groups and a pair of interlocking lozenges. The decoration on the wall is a row of pairs of spirals encircling a trident. The background features an oriental scene with water, islands and two figures, surrounded by a thin double ring. The main island is painted a faded blue and supports an enormous central willow tree. On one side of the tree is a three-quarter view of a child, who appears to be dancing; on the other side, a woman sits on the edge of a sock-painted table holding a basket of fruit, towards which the woman is holding out her hand. A rock lined with conifer stems rises behind the table. In the background, another rock-lined island stands out, home to three double-sloped pavilions and trees. Birds flutter in the sky. The rim of the plate is covered with an iron-brown coating.
