Plate
The plate is complete; there are some chips around the rim and some breaks have been repaired with metal studs. The plate is circular with an octagonal rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the side is socked and the bottom is flat and recessed. The plate rests on a small milled foot, located in line with the outer wall and free of glaze. The plate is broken and has been repaired with metal spikes. The reverse side of the plate features four pairs of drilled holes, each housing a copper metal spike. Two of the spikes are also visible on the marli side, and the pair of holes visible on the plate side are blocked with white material ; The decoration is hand-painted in monochrome blue underglaze, and in red and gold overglaze, in the Imari style from China. It is of the Oriental scenic type. The decoration is visible on the inner rim, wall and base. The decoration on the marli is a complex frieze: it is bordered by a braid of oval pearls with a core, underlined by a fillet, all traced in blue. It consists of two different motifs repeated in alternation. One motif consists of an extended, truncated triangular shape, traced in blue and gold and adorned with a beaded lattice traced and painted in red; a half-flower traced and painted in red and surrounded by leaves painted in blue rests at the center of the top of the shape, and is flanked by two acanthus leaves traced and painted in blue. The other motif is polylobed; bordered by blue scrolls, some painted blue and gold, it is trimmed with a spiked latticework drawn in red and painted a faded red. The polylobed motif is bordered by two pierced coins in the center, traced in blue and painted in blue and red with gold highlights, from which emerges a leafy stem traced and painted in blue, surmounted by a flower traced in red and painted in faded red. The scrolls are adorned with small flowers traced in red and lined with leaves traced and painted in blue with gold highlights. The decoration on the wall is a blue-painted braid supporting, in alternation, three small aligned pearls traced and painted in red and another painted in blue. The background decoration is bordered by a simple ring and consists of an oriental scene with a river and two islands. The main island is traced in blue and painted in faded blue; it supports a tiered pavilion, traced in blue and painted in faded red; it is bordered by a willow tree, bamboo plants and a large rock traced and painted in faded blue, which stands at the foot of a large leafy, flowering tree; it is traced in blue and painted in faded blue, while its flowers are painted in red with gold highlights. On the island stands a fisherman with a fishing rod, while in the foreground there’s a fence with a central post, drawn in blue and painted in blue and red, with gold highlights. The second island is outlined in blue and painted a faded blue; it supports three double-roofed pavilions and stylized trees. A small covered boat sails on the water between the two islands. The perimeter of the plate is covered with iron-brown plaster.
