Plate
The plate is octagonal in shape, with a plain rim pinched at regular intervals. It is complete except for a few chips near and below the rim. The rim is thick and slightly domed. The rim is almost flat, the wall is curved and the base is flat. On the reverse, the plate rests on a flat base without a foot. There appear to be three traces of three pernette marks on the reverse of the plate. There are three traces of pernette on the front of the plate. There are a few small flaws in the glaze covering the inner rim of the plate. There is a printed mark under the base: a star or flower. There are linear marks on the inner base and numerous marks under the base near its edge. There are wear marks on the junction of the marli and the inner wall ; The decoration is applied by transfer printed; it is dark blue in color and has an oriental motif (Two figures or Conversation). The printed decoration is visible on the marli, on the inner wall and on the inner base, and occupies almost the entire face of the plate. The decoration on the marli consists of two different elements. Near the rim is a band of small pearls in reserve, each with a dark blue core. The main decoration consists of two groups of alternately repeated motifs. The motifs appear to be delimited by a poly-lobed medallion finished with a spearhead motif and bordered by a drapery and two scrolls. One of the medallions features a body of water bordered by a cliff and a tree, while the other shows an islet with pavilion and tree. Near the edge, one of the groups is composed of a row and half-row of alveoli decorated with radiating and open-core lines and bordered by two interlocking lozenges, decorated on the inside with plant motifs; the whole is flanked by a butterfly with outstretched wings. Close to the wall are leafy, flowering branches. The other group consists of a wide band of staggered rhombuses with an internal cross, bordered by a band of triangles made of parallel lines. The band and entablature are interrupted by two squares and a rectangle made of two Greek shapes, which enclose rows of core beads. The wall is adorned with a thin-stroke band made of one row and two half-rows of staggered, radiating, open-core beads. The background decoration is bordered by the wall band. It features an oriental scene with river, bridge and islands. On the main island, in the foreground and hatched, rises a tiered pagoda topped by a roof with central pole; it is bordered by pavilions and trees on the right, elongated mountains in the background and rocks on the water’s edge. At the foot of the central pagoda is an unhatched area of roughly square shape, in which two standing figures, seen in profile and facing each other, are painted. The area is bounded on the left by a fence whose compartments are made of swastikas; the fence appears to be mounted on stilts, which seem to be enclosed by a wide, beaded lattice. Behind the fence stand three trees, while to his left stretches a bridge seen in profile that spans a stream to reach another island on which stands a tree-lined pagoda. A figure crosses the three-arched bridge; a sailboat sails at the foot of the bridge. In the upper background is another island with two buildings and trees; rocks line the water’s edge. The rendering of the scenery is clear. The junction of the marli decor is visible in several places, as is the junction of the wall decor.
