Historical context
This seal, called natsiq in the Inuit language, lifts a fish (Iqaluk) in its mouth and holds it firmly by the tail. Here, the schematic treatment of the figuration exploits the tension built up in the marine mammal’s body as it struggles with its prey: its torso is raised, with the arched back extending to the rear flippers, which also point upwards.
