Historical context
Two walrus-ivory seals (Inuit: natsiq, singular) stretch out in an alert posture, their heads pointing upwards at an angle and their caudal fins raised. They stand side by side on a soapstone base evoking an ice floe. The difference in size between the two marine mammals suggests an adult with a calf, also known as a whitecoat.
