Historical context

For craftsmen, miniaturization is by definition an exercise in virtuosity. On this Inuit miniature, the regularity of the stitches and the shape demonstrate a great mastery of the technique. This technique of rolling up the sand rye, or “ivigak” in Inuktitut, is most frequently used by Inuit to make containers or bases for dolls, and formerly insulating soles.
