Historical context

Steatite sculpture of a narwhal (Monodon monceros), a small whale distinguished by the long ivory tusk found mainly in males. In fact, its twisted left canine tooth can measure up to 3 meters long. Here, it was carved from a piece of walrus ivory. In Europe in the Middle Ages, the tusk of the “sea unicorn” was traded for its magical powers of healing and protection.
