Historical context

Inuit sculpture depicting a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) on a mound next to a smaller bird. The two birds, carved from walrus ivory, are on the ground, close to a nest that was carved into the soapstone base. The large dimensions of the nest and its three eggs confirm that they belong to the uppik, or snowy owl in Inuktitut.
