Historical context

This small soapstone sculpture depicts a seal with a schematic, not very elaborate form. With no base or other context, this natsiq – seal in Inuit – raises its head slightly, resting on its pectoral fins, as if awakening from a rest on an ice floe, rock or beach. He lies heavily on his belly, his hind flippers flattened and curving to his left, breaking the monotony of the sparsely detailed whole.
