Historical context
Soapstone sculpture of a drummer. Here, the drum (qilaut in Inuit) is carved from a flat piece of caribou antler. Traditionally, it was made from a piece of wood bent to form a circle. On this round frame with a handle, a caribou skin was carefully stretched and held in place by a string. The instrument was used for entertainment, ceremonial purposes and even to resolve conflicts.
