Historical context
The beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) is distinguished from other whales by its small size and the remarkable flexibility of its body. This white whale carved from walrus ivory soberly illustrates the sinuous swimming movement of the qilalugaq, or beluga in Inuktitut.
