Bowl

The bowl is complete; a break has been repaired with glue. The bowl is circular in shape. In profile, it has a wall that flares slightly at the top, topped by a flared rim. The lower part of the wall is curved towards the bottom, which is flat. The bowl rests on a solid ring foot, whose beveled base is free of glaze. There is a blue-painted mark below the base, within a double ring; it is a geometric symbol. There are slight flaws in the glaze of the inner base; the decoration covers the outer face of the bowl, as well as the inner rim, wall and base. The decoration is of the floral and animal type, and of the external brown coating type, known as Batavia. It is hand-painted in underglaze blue. The ribbon below the inner rim is outlined with a fillet and decorated with a group of four alternately traced and painted blue motifs: a half-flower, two double-headed stems and two sloping bands. The decoration on the wall features two main elements arranged in a mirror-like fashion: a long, undulating stem with a similar flower at each end – probably peonies and chrysanthemums – and a variety of leaves and tendrils. The space between them is decorated with a winged insect and a small leafy plant. The background decoration is surrounded by a double ring. It consists of an undulating terrace at the center of which rises a rectangular mass; it is bordered by a shrub with thin, curved, leafy branches, and a hare seen in profile. The entire outer surface is covered with a shiny brown, iron-based plaster.
