Historical context
From its earliest prototypes, the automobile became a symbol of modern engineering for men. The ideology of separate spheres that took root at the end of the 19th century was a belief system based on the gendered division of society. According to these beliefs, women are assigned to the domestic and family spheres, and men to the exercise of power in the public sphere.
