Historical context
This is a photograph by William Notman of the Rialto Theatre. Notman immigrated to Montreal from Scotland in 1856, and between 1858 and 1860, he photographed every stage in the construction of the Victoria Bridge. The quality of his work quickly made him a household name, and his studio, taken over by his sons following his death, produced countless images of the city of Montreal.
