Black and white photograph. Spring breakup on the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. View of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue church in Longueuil on the south shore. Breakup of the ice cover that covers the river in winter usually occurs in early April. The ice breaks up with a loud crash, causing several feet of ice to pile up on the shore. The photograph was taken at the very spot where, from 1880 onwards, the ice bridge linking Montreal (Hochelaga) to Longueuil was installed.
