Black and white photograph. CGS Mikula icebreaker on the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. This coal-fired steamboat is shown here activating the engine power needed to break up the ice. The first icebreaker designed and built in Canada by Canadian Vickers, this vessel, known as the J.D. Hazen when produced in 1916, was sold to Russia, where she contributed to the war effort. Purchased by the Canadian government in 1922, she was used until 1937 by the Canadian Coast Guard (CGS) to maintain the St. Lawrence waterway in winter and prevent flooding.
