Historical context

This calling card, a cardboard-mounted photograph made by Livernois in 1861, shows the portrait of Austin (Augustin) Cuvillier (1779-1849) as President of the Assembly of the Province of Canada. The painting itself is a copy by Théophile Hamel (1817-1870), commissioned by the government of the Province of Canada in 1853 to create portraits of the presidents of the Assembly since 1791.
