Historical context
This calling card, a cardboard-mounted photograph by Livernois in 1861, shows a portrait of Joseph-Rémy Vallières de Saint-Réal (1787-1847) as Speaker of the House of Assembly of Lower Canada between 1823 and 1825. The painting itself is a copy by Théophile Hamel (1817-1870), commissioned by the Government of the United Province of Canada in 1853 to create portraits of the Speakers of the Assembly.
