John Young, né en 1811 à Ayr en Écosse et mort le 12 avril 1878 à Montréal, devient, au courant du 19e siècle, l’un des marchands montréalais les plus influents de son époque. Arrivé à Montréal en 1830, il entre dans le commerce en tant que commis chez la John Torrance & Company avant de s’associer à Harrison Stephens, un marchand américain, avec lequel il fonde la Stephens, Young & Company.
