Black & white photograph of Empress Eugénie de Montijo (María Eugenia Ignacia Agustina de Palafox-Portocarrero de Guzmán y Kirkpatrick, 1826-1920), Marquise d’Ardales, Marquise de Moya, 20th Countess of Teba, a French political figure of Spanish origin. She was the wife of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, and therefore Empress of the French from January 29, 1853 to September 4, 1870. Her regency during the 1870 war made her the last woman to govern France with the prerogatives of a head of state. In the photo, she is seated in front of a table, observing a picture frame in her right hand.
