Black and white photograph of Pope Pius IX (Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, 1792-1878), 255th pope of the Catholic Church. His pontificate lasted 31 years. Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. He also convened the first ecumenical Vatican Council, which defined papal infallibility. This council was interrupted when Italian troops invaded Rome. Pius IX was the last ruler of the Church States, which disappeared in 1870. He was proclaimed “blessed” by the Catholic Church in 2000.
