Colored view of Montreal from Mount Royal. Montreal in the 1850s was now home to some 60,000 people, mostly living south of today’s Sherbrooke Street. Artist Edwin Whitefield shows Notre-Dame Church dominating the landscape, St. Patrick’s Church among the trees, McGill University’s Pavillon des Arts and picnickers overlooking the city.
