The Changing Scene / Changement de Scène
Lithograph reproduction. Rue Notre-Dame, Place Jacques-Cartier, looking west from Hôtel de Ville. On the left, barely visible, is the base of the Monument Nelson (1809), around which flower vendors gather in summer. In the early 1900s, the cigar store was home to the Silver Dollar Saloon, the famous meeting place for sailors and longshoremen. Silver dollars, charged with electricity, were attached to the surface of the bar. The unsuspecting customer who tried to “steal” a dollar received a shock, courtesy of the bartender who pressed the button hidden under the counter.
