The Changing Scene / Changement de Scène
Lithograph reproduction. Looking north on De Maisonneuve Street from Craig Street in Montreal’s old French-Canadian quarter, known as “Faubourg à la Mélasse”. The only remaining building is the Ste-Brigide church in the background. Nineteen city blocks, comprising 262 buildings, were demolished to make way for the multi-million-dollar Centre de Radio-Canada. Over seven hundred families had to be relocated, demonstrating the sheer scale of the project.

Historical context
In the post-war years, Montreal underwent a period of significant modernization: economic prosperity, urban sprawl and the cultural expansion of the French-speaking population combined to profoundly transform the city’s urban landscape. However, this modernizing impetus was sometimes to the detriment of certain buildings, certain neighborhoods and certain aspects of Montreal’s history.
