Soup plate

The plate is complete; there are some cracks around the rim. The plate is circular with an octagonal rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the sides are socked and the bottom is flat and recessed. The plate rests on a small ring-shaped foot, which is free of glaze; the decoration is traced and hand-painted in underglaze blue. The decoration covers the rim and bottom of the plate. It is of the lakeside landscape type. The border frieze is complex and composed of various elements. Near the rim, there is a narrow braid trimmed with core ovals. The frieze is composed of two groups of different elements, placed alternately. One group consists of a flower in the center of a lattice background bordered by a rosette and supporting two sets of plants painted dark blue, while the other consists of a spiral background with a flower in the center and supporting two sets of plants painted dark blue. The background is bordered by a ring supporting a row of double scrolls surmounted by a trident. The background depicts an oriental scene with a river and two islands. On the main island, painted in faded blue, stands a pavilion with an oriental-style stepped roof, flanked by two trees, a deciduous and a pine, with a willow near the shore; the island is lined with a few rocks. A small boat sails on the water in front of the island. On the second island stands a building with a roof supported by poles; it is flanked by trees and rocks. A pointed mountain rises in the distance, and groups of stylized birds twirl in the sky.
