Soup plate
The plate is complete. It is circular in shape, with a rim that is wavy and pointed at regular intervals. The rim is thick and slightly domed. The rim slopes slightly inwards, with a small bulge at its junction with the wall; the wall is curved and the base is slightly domed. On the reverse, the plate rests on a ring-shaped foot, free of glaze. The bottom is recessed and flat. There are two pernette marks on the inside wall. There is a mark below the bottom: it is printed in blue and consists of two elements, a royal crown surmounting a rectangular banner adorned with the words PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA in two registers. There are small marks on the inner background; the decoration is molded and applied by transfer printing; it is blue in color and features a Chinese landscape motif. The molded decoration is visible on the rim. The printed decoration is visible on the marli, on the wall and on the inner background. The molded decoration consists of a row of wavy lines; in line with the points around the rim is a garland supporting a small molded pendant. The printed decoration on the border consists of two sets of alternating branches. The decoration on the wall consists of an open braid at the top, highlighted by two lines at the base. It is composed of two alternating motifs: one is a lattice of flowers with four oval petals placed in a staggered pattern, and the other is a plant motif encircled between two curved bands, the inner one being in reserve. The background is a Chinese lake scene, with islands and buildings. In the foreground is a terrace, a portion of which is solid; it supports two trees and a rock, and its shoreline is indented. To the left are two Chinese buildings flanked by a cliff with two trees growing out of it; to the right rises a high crenellated wall pierced by a large gate; from its summit emerge a tiered pagoda and two trees. In the background is an island of stylized rocks, home to two tiered pagodas, the foreground one bounded by a stone wall and flanked by a pole. Two mountains separate the pagodas. A boat sails in front of the island. The rendering of the scenery is sharp.
