The Changing Scene / Changement de Scène
Lithograph reproduction. Looking north on St-Gabriel, from the corner of Ste-Thérèse, behind the new Palais de Justice, in the heart of Old Montreal. The buildings in the center of the drawing (north of Notre-Dame to Craig) have already been demolished to make way for the new Palais de Justice. Among the historic buildings destroyed was the Hôtel St-Gabriel, the oldest in North America, founded by Richard Dulong in 1754. The tradition continues, however, as the building on the left now houses the Auberge St-Gabriel, whose door panels and woodwork are from the old hotel, as is the massive fireplace built from stones left over from the old walls.
