Portrait de Zaïde Paré
This bust portrait by William Raphael is framed with an oval opening, and is dated and signed in the lower right-hand corner. It depicts Zaïde Paré wearing an outfit that reflects the social status of the Montreal bourgeoisie to which she belonged. Around her neck, she wears a medal bearing the letter Z, probably superimposed on the letter V, for Vinet, her mother’s name, on a mauve ribbon tied into a loop. Her gaze is slightly to her left.

Historical context
Zaïde Paré, born in 1844, was the daughter of merchant Hubert Paré (1803-1869) and Virginie-Justine Vinet. She married Louis-Édouard Desjardins (1837-1919) on June 4, 1867. They had two sons and four daughters. She was one of the subscribers to the monument to Mgr Jean-Jacques Lartigue (1777-1840), first bishop of Montreal.
