Compotier

The compotier is complete; there is some missing enamel around the rim, particularly at the corners, and a crack has been repaired with iron studs. The compotier is octagonal with a plain outline. In cross-section, the wing is inclined, less so than the wall, which is also inclined towards the bottom before curving towards the flat bottom. The bottom rests on an annular foot with a truncated cone-shaped cross-section. The body is brownish-red in color and covered with a bluish-white glaze; the foot is unglazed. There are smudges of enamel under the compotier, near the rim, as well as a few small holes in the enamel on the reverse. Three traces of linear and triangular pernettes are visible under the wall. The foot is pierced by two aligned circular holes, the inner wall of which is covered with enamel; one of the holes is broken. There is a crack at the top of the compotier, repaired with three rusty iron spikes. Made from a double iron rod, they are each inserted into a pair of small circular holes drilled in the back of the compotier and held in place by a hard white paste ; The decoration is hand-painted in polychrome. It has been traced and painted in blue and black underglaze, and in red with yellow highlights overglaze. It is of the compartmented braid and floral basket type. The decoration is painted on the marli, near the rim, and in the center of the background. The border is decorated with a braid. It is outlined in black and painted in blue, red and yellow. The braid is decorated with two repeated motifs. The main motif, in reserve and mirrored, consists of a reserved half-flower set between two scrolls that emerge from two wing-shaped quarter-flowers. These flowers are adorned with red radiating lines, with yellow highlights on the central flower. The other motif separates the main decoration with a reserved tongue, drawn in black and adorned with a central dash painted in black, with a yellow highlight. The background features a flowery basket. The basket is truncated cone-shaped, with a flat swollen bottom and a horizontal swollen rim. It is outlined in black, painted blue and filled with horizontal dashes painted red; the basket’s rendering imitates rattan. From the top of the basket emerge a central half-flower flanked by two flowers in a row; they are surrounded by leafy plant stems and grapes, and all these trimmings are outlined in black. The half-flower is decorated with red radiating lines and yellow highlights; the flowers are partially filled with red radiating lines. The leaves are painted blue, while the grapes are partially painted blue. Red tendrils hang from the basket. The basket rests on a base imitating fawn feet, traced in black and painted blue; it is set on a terrace made of two superimposed strokes traced in black and painted blue.
