Vase

The vase is complete, with the exception of the vertical neck handles, which are broken and missing; some breaks have been repaired with wire. The vase features a cylindrical neck that flares towards the top, which is flat and free of glaze. The shoulder is rounded and the body has four straight sides with beveled corners. The base is circular and narrow, while the vase rests on a massive, domed foot. The foot is flat and free of glaze; the underside of the base is recessed and flat. On two opposite sides, from the neck to the foot, seven pairs of holes hold as many spikes, each made of two wires held in place with a white paste ; The decoration is molded and hand-painted in monochrome blue. It is plant and floral in style. Molded decoration is present on the shoulder and base, as well as on the corners. On the shoulder and on the lower part of the wall, it consists of a row of triangular leaves; those at the top point downwards, while those at the bottom point upwards. The corners have a vertical groove. Two opposite sides of the neck show the beginnings of two vertical handles that have been molded separately. Painted decoration is visible under the rim, on the neck, on the shoulder, on all four sides and on the base; there is also painted decoration under the bottom. The decoration under the rim is a braid drawn in blue and outlined with a fillet; it is adorned with a row of alternating groups of oblique crosshatching in two directions. The neck is decorated on opposite sides with plant and floral motifs. It is underlined by a double fillet. The row of triangular leaves molded onto the shoulder and the row molded onto the wall are adorned with radiating fillets from their tips. The four walls feature different floral and plant decorations, framed by two vertical fillets near the corners. The plant decorations occupy the full height of the walls, and rest on an uneven terrace; the plants, leaves and flowers differ. Three decorations feature a winged insect at the top, and two feature a crescent moon. The base is adorned with a braid encircled by a fillet, and decorated with a row of scrolls. The decoration below the base is a blue-painted open lozenge, one of the eight precious objects of Confucian philosophy.
