Vase

The vase is incomplete; a portion of the rim is missing and has been redone in plaster. The vase is octagonal. It is shaped like an inverted baluster, with a rounded shoulder topped by a short circular neck. The lower part of the wall is narrowed and flares out to form a massive base. The perimeter of the base is concave. The base has a narrow fulcrum, which has lost some of its glaze; the bottom is recessed and flat. There is a mark painted in blue under the base, in three registers: i G 13 trait. ; The decoration is molded and hand-painted in cobalt blue, under glaze. It features an oriental animal motif with a bird. The molded decoration affects the shape of the vase, which has eight flat vertical sides with rounded corners. The painted decoration covers the entire surface of the vase, from neck to base. The neck is decorated with a row of recumbent trifoliate motifs, encircled by two superimposed fillets. The shoulder features a free band between two fillets. The lower fillet is decorated with two different motifs repeated in alternation. One motif features two superimposed spheres, drawn and painted in blue and adorned with a trifoliate motif, while the other is a polylobed motif, trimmed en suite. The main decoration covers a portion of the shoulder and the wall, and consists of two alternately repeated motifs. One motif consists of a bird seen in profile to the right, standing on a large flower emerging from leafy stems. The other motif is a leafy stem, topped with a trifoliate leaf. The space between these motifs is decorated with stars, wavy lines and clustered pearls. The decoration near the base is identical to that on the shoulder, and sits on a fillet, followed by two others. The base is adorned with a row of vertical palmettes adorned with branches. Between them is a row of trifoliate motifs.
