Toothpaste jar lid

The lid is complete. It is circular in shape, with a slightly domed top and bulging rim. The wall is recessed and raised, with a flat, wide, glaze-free base; the inside of the lid is recessed and slightly concave; the decoration is printed in polychrome in black, pale blue and yellow (bronze), underglaze on the top of the lid and painted in gold over glaze. The decoration occupies the entire surface of the lid. It is encircled by a ring of hollowed-out pearls. This ring is surrounded by a band of gilding. The decoration is set in two concentric rings. The outer ring features two inscriptions in reserve on a background of black dots: CHERRY TOOTH PASTE PATRONIZED BY THE QUEEN. The central ring features a female bust with coiffed hair, seen in profile to the left, printed in black and yellow on a pale grey background covered with black shading dots at the front of the bust. Inscriptions surround the bust, each on a register: FOR BEAUTIFYING AND PRESERVING THE TEETH & GUMS PREPARED BY JOHN GOSNELL & CO LONDON.
