Historical context
A veritable miniature portable writing desk, the table-top escritoire is an object that included the inkwell, quill, paper and all the other necessities for writing. At one time, it also contained a seal and wax for sealing missives. Its maneuverability made it easy for the writer or copyist to move around with all the equipment needed for his task.
