Historical context
The bayonet is a bladed weapon that attaches to the end of a soldier’s rifle or carbine. Invented in the 17th century, it transforms the rifle into a spear, enabling the soldier to engage in close combat when his weapon is unloaded. The first bayonets blocked the barrel of the rifle, preventing it from firing. The invention of the sleeve to hold the bayonet around the rifle barrel came at the end of the 17th century.
