Serving plate

Duplessis dinnerware collection from the Assemblée nationale. The set is in white ceramic decorated with gold edging and a blue band. In the late 1940s, the Café du Parlement on Quebec City’s Grand Allée was equipped with its own assortment of tableware. On the initiative of Maurice Duplessis’s government, students in the artistic advertising course at the École des beaux-arts de Québec were invited to submit proposals in which the fleur-de-lis was to take pride of place. Jean-Paul Charland’s project was chosen from all the submissions received. However, the fleur-de-lys motif in the center of this plate was partially erased.
