Saucer
The saucer is complete; the glaze is missing around the rim. It is circular in shape. The wall is flared at the top, and the rim is very slightly flared. The wall curves at the base towards the sock, which is flat. It rests on a wide, asymmetrical ring foot. The underside of the base is recessed and flat. The base is beveled and free of glaze; the decoration covers the inside of the saucer, i.e. the inner rim and base. The decoration is of the Imari plant type. It is hand-painted in two-tone blue underglaze, then traced and painted in iron red, with gold highlights, over glaze. The braid under the inner edge is traced in blue and outlined with a fillet. It is composed of two alternately repeated elements. One element is a vegetal motif traced and painted in red, bordered by two leaves traced and painted in blue with gold, and set between arched lines traced and painted in blue and red with gold. The second element is a four-petal trellis with spikes traced in red. The background decoration rests on a terrace traced in blue and painted in faded red. The central element is a large rock with a hole in it, symbolizing the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, drawn and painted in blue with gold highlights. Behind the boulder emerge two leafy bamboo stems traced and painted blue; some leaves are traced and painted red. There are also leafy branches traced and painted blue with gilding, supporting large flowers traced and painted red with gilding, and another traced and painted blue with gilding; some leaves are traced and painted blue with gilding, while others are traced red with veins.
