Saucer
The saucer is complete. It is circular in shape. The wall is flared at the top, and the rim is very slightly flared. The wall curves at the base towards the sock, which is flat. It rests on a rounded foot ring. The underside of the base is recessed and flat. The foot is beveled and free of glaze. The decoration covers the inside of the saucer, i.e. the inner rim and bottom. The decoration is of the Chinese or Oriental garden type and is treated in Imari. It is hand-painted in two-tone blue underglaze, then traced and painted in iron red, with gold highlights, over glaze. The braid under the inner edge is traced in blue and outlined with a fillet. It is composed of two alternately repeated elements. One element is a vegetal motif traced and painted in red, bordered by two leaves traced and painted in blue with gold, and set between arched lines traced and painted in blue with gold. The second element is a double latticework with spikes traced in red. The background decoration rests on two blue terraces. The central element is a large rock with a hole in it, symbolizing the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, drawn and painted in blue with gold highlights. Behind the boulder emerge leafy branches traced and painted blue with gold, supporting flowers, including a large central one, traced and painted red with gold; some leaves are traced and painted blue with gold, while others are traced red with veins. To the right, there’s a fence with two vertical posts, traced and painted blue with gilding; the panels are adorned with sloping bars traced in red. Behind the fence grow leafy stems, traced and painted red; flowers are traced and painted blue with gilding. The top of the saucer is covered with a brown-painted ferruginous plaster.
