Saucer
The saucer is complete. It is circular in shape. The wall is flared at the top, and the rim is flared. The wall curves at the base towards the sock, which is flat. It rests on a rounded foot ring. The underside of the base is recessed and flat. The foot is beveled and free of glaze. The decoration covers the inside of the saucer, i.e. the inner rim and bottom, as well as part of the outer wall. The decoration is vegetal and fan-shaped, treated in Imari. It is hand-painted in two-tone blue underglaze, then traced and painted in iron red, with gold highlights, over glaze. A fillet is traced under the inner rim in blue. The decoration on the inner wall consists of the same element repeated on opposite walls. It consists of a fan embroidered by this fillet: it is traced in blue with gilding, and its blades are painted alternately in blue and red. The wall is occupied by a rectangular shape surrounded by a ribbon, all traced and painted in blue: this could be a musical instrument (Castanets of Cao Gozhui), one of the emblems of the Eight Immortals, or the Pair of Books, one of the Eight Precious Things. To the right of this form extends a long, wavy, leafy branch, traced and painted in blue, and trimmed with ribbed leaves traced in red. The two flowers, traced and painted in red and gold, that decorate it differ: in one case, it’s circular in shape, and in the other, a wavy oval. The center of the base is adorned with a ring traced in blue that surrounds a small five-leaf stem, traced and painted in blue, and surmounted by a flower, traced and painted in red. The top of the saucer is covered with a brown-painted ferruginous plaster. The outer wall is decorated with two long stylized branches outlined in blue with small leaves outlined in red.
