Historical context

In the late 1830s, American gunsmith Samuel Colt (1814-1862) developed a revolver that could fire six shots before needing to be reloaded. Other gunsmiths such as Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861) quickly imitated this type of mechanism. Soldiers and civilians in many countries adopted the revolver as a weapon for combat or personal defense.
