Punch bowl

The bowl is complete; there is a break in the rim, which has been repaired with copper metal studs. The bowl is circular in shape. In profile, the bowl has a wall that flares slightly at the top and is topped by a straight rim. The lower part of the wall is curved towards the bottom, which is flat, with the exception of the center, which is slightly domed. The bowl rests on a solid ring-shaped foot. The underside of the base features a deeply incised central ring. There are three pernette marks around this ring. There is a mark printed in blue in the center of the bottom: 111. There are flaws in the inner glaze, as well as in the glaze under the bottom. There are a few linear and curved marks on the inner base. The break has been repaired, on the outer wall, by five copper metal studs, each inserted in a pair of small holes drilled on the outer wall; these pairs of holes pass through the wall on three occasions, and are visible on the inner wall ; The decoration is applied by transfer printed; it is blue in color and has an oriental motif. The printed decoration is visible under the inner rim, on the inner base and on the outer wall. The decoration under the inner edge consists of two different motifs repeated alternately, separated by a third motif. One of the motifs consists of an area delimited by wide scrolls tied by a ring; it is filled, alternately, with either empty-core cells arranged in a staggered pattern, or small cells with cores. Near the edge of this pattern is a half-flower; pointed leaves emerge from the volutes at their base. The other motif is delineated by two full, mirrored Greciques, framing a two-pointed, full tongue with a flower flanked by leaves and two acanthus leaves at the tips. This ensemble supports foliage and flowers. The background depicts an oriental scene with a river and islands. On the main island, in the foreground, stand several pavilions, one of which is multi-storey and topped with a Greek roof; the façade is bordered by rocks and a low V-shaped brick wall; trees stand behind. In the foreground, a zig-zag fence links the first island to another on the right. On this island stands a tiered pagoda topped by a Greek-style roof. In front of the building stands a low brick wall, with rocks and trees at its foot. On the water between these two islands sails a small boat manoeuvred by a man with a long stick. In the background is a small island lined with rocks, trees and a tiered pavilion. Birds fly near the island. The decor on the outer wall is the same scene repeated twice on opposite sides. It consists of two islands linked by a bridge. The island on the right has several massive buildings lined with trees and enclosed at the front by fences or low walls. The bridge is single-arched and appears to be made of stone. At the center of the bridge stands a standing figure, seen in profile to the left; on his shoulder he carries a pole surmounted by a standard. Facing him is another figure climbing the bridge. At the foot of the bridge sails a small boat in which two people are seated, one carrying a parasol. On the second island are two buildings, one with a V-shaped fence at the front; they are separated by trees, and rocks line the water. In the background are several islets with various buildings and rocks. The rendering of the scenery is clear. The junction of the frieze under the inner edge is visible, as is that of the two scenes on the outer wall.
