Punch bowl
The bowl is complete; it has a few vertical cracks; one break has been repaired with glue. The bowl is circular in shape. In profile, the wall is slightly flared at the top, topped by a straight rim. The lower part of the wall is curved towards the bottom, which is flat. The bowl rests on a solid ring-shaped foot, whose beveled base is free of glaze ; The decoration covers almost the entire outer surface of the bowl, as well as the inner rim and bottom. It is hand-painted in polychrome enamel over glaze, in the Famille rose style. It is figurative, geometric and floral. The decoration on the outer wall is figurative and geometric. It consists of two different figurative scenes, separated by two similar floral medallions. The whole is framed, at the top and base, by a line painted in gray. One of the scenes features a trio: a man, a woman and a child, all outlined in orange and resting on a terrace painted in large strokes of orange enamel. The man is seen from three-quarters to the left; he is seated on the ground and his back appears to be resting on a rock suggested by a cloud of pale gray enamel. His long garment is painted pinkish red. Bald, except for an area behind his ear, he looks at a woman seated in front; she wears long, loose garments, including a pink-painted shirt, a green-painted tunic and a blue-painted skirt. Her hair, suggested by grey enamel, seems to be tied at the nape of her neck. She holds a green-painted fruit in her right hand, and brings the index finger of her left hand to her mouth, while looking at the man. Behind the man stands a child, dressed in a blue-painted tunic; a small tuft of hair stands on top of his head. Tufts of vegetation traced in red and painted green grow on the ground, and in the background rises a massive tree traced and partially painted orange. The other scene, framed in a similar setting, features four figures: four children and an adult woman. One of the children, wearing a pink-painted tunic and green-painted pants, stands to the right of a seated woman dressed in long, loose-fitting garments painted blue, pink, red and green; her hair, suggested by gray enamel, seems to be tied at the nape of her neck. She looks at the child, who does the same. To the left, two children crouch, facing each other and appearing to converse. They are wearing a tunic and pants; the green and pink enamels are reversed on their clothing. The two scenes are separated by a large lobed medallion painted in dark gray; each medallion is adorned in the center with a leafy, flowering plant: the elements are outlined in orange, while the leaves are painted in green and the flowers in pink. The medallions are framed, at the top and base, by a latticework outlined in dark gray and painted orange. The upper trellis is decorated with crosses, while the lower trellis is adorned with pearls. The frieze below the bowl’s inner rim is a band painted dark gray and outlined with an orange fillet. It is composed of a row of hexagonal cells outlined in dark gray, which are lined with an orange-painted, serrated circle on the inside. The center of the background is adorned with leafy, flowering vegetation: the elements are outlined in orange, while the leaves are painted green and the flowers pink. The medallions are framed, at the top and base, by a latticework drawn in dark gray and painted orange. The top of the bowl is covered with a light-brown coating.
