Bound will – Le Gaufre. With Permission. 8 pages, small quarto [23 cm]. Modern binding (19th century). “In 1645 and 1646, on the one hand, the Associates of Montreal were working on the erection of a bishopric in Canada, and were proposing a candidate of their choice, Abbé Thomas Le Gaufre; if they succeeded, that would be the end of Jesuit autonomy in New France. An astonishing printed document, which as early as 1646, four years after the founding of Ville-Marie, established this privileged link between the metropolis and the religious work taking place in the colony.” (Dictionary of Canadian Biography) He is the author of : Récit véritable de ce qui s’est fait et passé aux exorcismes de plusieurs religieuses de la ville de Louviers, en présence de Monsieur le Pénitencier d’Évreux et de Monsieur Le Gauffre, Paris, G. Alliot, 1643.
